Good morning, Bastrop County! ☀️

This is a weekend of hellos and goodbyes. Three of our local places have birthdays: Cedar's Coppice turns one on Sunday with music from open to close, and out in McDade the Yegua Creek Brewery turns three and Rising Sun Vineyard turns seven on the very same Saturday, cake and all, right in the middle of the Grape Stomp. In the same breath, Tecuén in Bastrop and Hope Floats in Smithville are both closing for good on August 30, so if you have been meaning to go, this is the week. Add a free showing of The Lorax at Fisherman's Park, a full moon hike, and a rare market day out in Rosanky, and there is a lot here that costs little or nothing. One note before you make plans: a county burn ban took effect Monday and runs through September 14, so keep the fire pits cold. Grab a glass of sweet tea and let's dig in.

🎂 This Week's Feature | Three Birthdays, One Opening and Two Goodbyes

Some weeks the county hands you a theme whether you asked for it or not. Three of our places are blowing out candles, one just unlocked its doors for the first time, and two are serving their last customers. All of it in the same seven days.

🎉 Three birthdays in one weekend

Cedar's Coppice turns one. Shelby White opened at 709 Chestnut Street on August 30, 2025, a date she chose because it was her late father's birthday. They are marking it twice: a disco party Saturday from 4 to 8pm, then the birthday itself Sunday from 8am to 6pm with live music open to close, face painting until 1pm, plus raffles and giveaways all day.

Yegua Creek Brewery turns three and Rising Sun Vineyard turns seven, on the same Saturday, on the same property out on Edmonson Ranch Road in McDade. They are calling it a double celebration and there will be cake: $3 beers, $7 wings, free raffles and limited brewery shirts, with The LTD's playing 4 to 7pm right in the middle of the Grape Stomp.

🍳 And one brand new arrival

The Toasted Yolk Cafe opened Monday out at Sendero. They warmed up the weekend before with a two-morning preview that raised money for Bastrop County Cares, which is a pretty decent way to introduce yourself to a town. It is an all-day brunch spot, and the patio is pet friendly.

🧡 Two goodbyes | Tecuén and Hope Floats close August 30

While three of our places celebrate, two others are serving their last customers. Both close for good on Sunday, August 30.

Tecuén opened in Burleson Crossing on August 17, 2024. Emanuel Peña and Yuri Corral named it after Tecuena, a small island on Lake Pátzcuaro in their home state of Michoacán. For two years they made: scratch-made paletas, hand-folded sweet and savory crepes, espresso pulled from beans grown in Chiapas, and had a children's play area in view of the seating, which made it the rare coffee shop where parents got to drink their coffee hot.

Hope Floats has been the ice cream and bakery stop just off Main in Smithville, the kind of place you walk to after dinner. They are closing the same day.

If either of these places has ever been part of your week, go this week. Saturday is your best shot at both, since Sunday is a short day and the shelves tend to empty out on a last day. Buy something, tip well, and tell them thank you. Small towns keep the places we show up for.

🙏 And one more, for your prayers

Chinese Dragon on Highway 71 in Bastrop is closed for the time being. The reason has not been made public. If they have fed your family over the years, keep them in your prayers this week. We will let you know the moment we hear they have reopened.

🔥 Burn ban in effect through September 14

Bastrop County Commissioners Court adopted an outdoor burning ban effective 5pm Monday, August 24, and it runs through Monday, September 14 unless the court lifts it sooner.

The order covers the unincorporated areas of the county and prohibits igniting, or causing the ignition of, any combustible or vegetative material outdoors. Violating it is a Class C misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500. Bastrop County Office of Emergency Management
