Good morning, Bastrop County

The second week of October is a big one for getting out of the house.

Friday night dirt trucks hit the track at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, and Rednecks & Rockers takes over Mayfest Park in Bastrop for two days of live bands, BBQ and an auction that benefits local students. The Bastrop Opera House opens Shakespeare (Abridged) the same night. Saturday adds Oktoberfest in McDade, the Nocturn Market in Elgin and the pumpkin patches, and Sunday evening Elgin hosts the Great Pumpkin Bash. Thursday night downtown Elgin goes hog wild for Sip, Shop & Stroll.

Our Featured Business this week is the Elgin pizzeria that started a Texas-only pizza and beer mini-empire. Let's dig in.

Friday, October 9 from 2pm through Saturday, October 10 at 11:30pm | Mayfest Park, 25 American Legion Dr, Bastrop

The 6th annual Rednecks & Rockers brings two days of live music, a BBQ cook-off, raffles and a live auction to Mayfest Park, and the money goes to Bastrop County students through Jack of Hearts. Bring a lawn chair, bring your appetite and stay for the bands. Jack of Hearts

Some pizza places have a menu. Aviator has a family recipe that is older than the restaurant.

Aviator Pizza & Drafthouse started in Elgin in 2014, opened by husband-and-wife team John McElroy and Dr. Ana Lam-McElroy, and Elgin is where the brand began. The company says its family history of making pizza goes back more than 30 years, and the heart of it is the dough: a family yeast strain that has been in use for 26 years, shaped into a crispy sourdough crust and brushed with rosemary-infused pizza oil. Dough is made fresh daily, and the toppings are chopped in house.

The other half of the name is the drafthouse. The menu is 100% Texan, with more than 50 Texas craft beers and wines on tap, so a pizza night here doubles as a tour of the state's breweries and vineyards. Pizzas come in 9, 12 and 14 inch sizes, there is a gluten-free crust in 12 inch, and there is vegan cheese for anyone who needs it.
